From the reviews
What is known colloquially as Bannerman’s Castle is the brick facade of the Bannerman Arsenal as he called it, a military surplus storage facility built in 1901 on the north east corner of Pollepel Island in the Hudson River.
Bannerman Castle is a fun side trip that you can take from NY City. The train runs right to a station that you hop off and walk maybe 40 to 50 yards to the dock where the boat picks you up to take you over. The island is small and has a number of good views up and down river.
We had the perfect day and the last day of the season to visit the castle. The ferry ride was great. Our captain and co captain were great hosts. The guides on the island were very helpful and knowledgeable with information and answered questions for people too. Definitely wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
I've wanted to take this tour ($45) for a while now but finally got around to it recently on a lovely fall Sunday morning. While the tour is timed at 2.5 hours...you spend closer to 1.5 hours on the island itself, factoring in the 30-minute boatride to and from the island.
Getting married at Bannerman Castle
A castle wedding is the once-in-a-lifetime, storybook kind — the grand staircase, the ballroom, the gardens and turrets your photos will live on forever. Castle weddings commonly run $10,000–$40,000+ depending on the date, guest count, and how much is included, so ask for a written quote for your season — Bannerman Castle doesn’t publish a set price, and tiers move fast. Two things make the tour worth the drive. First, see it at the time of day you’d actually get married — a ballroom that glows at golden hour can feel very different at noon, and you’ll want to walk the path your guests take from the gates to the ceremony to the reception. Second, bring your real questions: what’s included with the venue fee (tables, chairs, setup, teardown), the catering and bar policy, whether you can stay overnight on-site, the rain plan for a garden ceremony, and the music curfew. Fairytale dates at castle venues book 12–18 months out, so if the tour feels right, ask what’s open in your season before you leave.
